Nether-Polar Urals 2002

The Urals have the certain image among the people, to the great extent it was formed by Bajov’s fairy tales and other legends. This mountain range is often called as old, and even ancient, and there are lots of gems in its entrails. It looks like the truth, when you talk about the middle part of the Urals. But there is a purpose of calling the Urals “The Stone belt”, they stretch from Kazakhstan to the Kara sea, dividing Europe from Asia. The geographers divided the Urals to several parts which differ from each other. There are the South, the Middle, the North, the Pripolyarny and the Polar Urals. As for the Pripolyarny Urals you can’t avoid superlatives talking about it. It’s bounded by the Hulga beginnings (in latitude 65°40¢ North) and Mount Telposiz (in latitude 64° North). This territory is situated to the south of the Polar Urals. First of all it’s the highest part of the mountain range, there are several high tops with the highest one – Narodnaya (1895m). It’s also the widest part, which creates a system of mountain ranges. It can be called the heart of the Urals. This region was officially discovered surprisingly not long ago, in 1927. There are iced sharp tops, deep canyons, rocks, rapid rivers and waterfalls. The Pripolyarny Urals is severe, but it doesn’t look like old. The Alp forms of the relief tell about rather young age of the mountains in this region. I had a pleasure to work in this wonderful place of our planet. The expedition was held by request of a publishing house Penta. The materials were used for printing a photo album. The route of 100 kilometres lies from Mount Neroika to Mount Narodnaya. I had to travel there twice to make a summer photo session in July and autumn one in September. The trip was made in traditional style, i.e. on my own. You can read about this travel in the article «In the heart of the Stone belt».
