TOWNS OF RUSSIA

Central Altai 2001

A trip for two weeks in the region of Beluha from its southern side. I made it as a member of a tourist group from Ust’-Kamenogorsk. The Altai is a vast mountain land situated in the southern part of Siberia. It’s the highest area of not only Siberia but the whole Asian part of Russia. Only Klyuchevskaya sopka in Kamchatka is higher than the main top of the Altai – Beluha, 4506 m. The southern part of it is situated on the territory of Mongolia and China. The Bia and the Katun have their sources in the Altai ices. When these two rivers flow together they form the Ob, one of the great Siberian rivers. Such towns as Barnaul, Ust’-Kamenogorsk, Biisk, Gorno-Altaisk are situated not far away. In the Altai itself there are few settlements. But besides rare population it’s discovered better than the Sayan mountains located to the east. These places are worth of great attention because of their beauty and originality. Travelers of different categories and interests find here something interesting for themselves. The most popular region in the Altai is the Katunsky mountain range with its top Beluha. Native settlers of this region are the Altaians, representatives of the Turkic group of nationalities. The nomadic life left them love to horses. In summer time it’s a good opportunity to get money by transporting of numerous groups of tourists. Not only experienced travelers go there, but also aged people and even children. Beautiful iced mountains, rapid rivers, flowers, taiga can conquer hearts of all nature lovers. Beluha itself with its outskirts is a wonder of the world, which is worth seeing.
